Double Bubble
Kim Faler 25 Feb - 31 Mar 2022 Originally commissioned by MASS MoCA and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Kohler Co. in 2019/2020, the installation comprises a series of approximately 20 sculptures, suspended from PALO gallery’s 15-foot ceiling, to form the artist’s latest multi-sensorial landscape. Each individual sculpture is a large-scale rendering of a wad of chewed bubble gum, cast in a wide range of materials including metal, wax, chalk, glass and gypsum among others, unobscured by the accompanying pigment and paint of pastel greens and pinks. As Faler explains, the work explores “the quick and intimate forms which we make with our mouths while chewing gum...I see these forms as visual manifestations of our anxiety, and an illustration of the tension that we have come to reside with.” Read more -
“Illuminations At Twilight Held Fast By Terror”
Auguste Garufi 10 Dec 2021 - 31 Jan 2022 Auguste Garufi's “illuminations at twilight held fast by terror” focuses on work from the late 1990s to the 2010s. Garufi describes his work as a search for essence, aura and entry points into a deeper understanding of our universe. His search manifests itself in collage, sculpture, design, writing, print-making and photography. “illuminations at twilight held fast by terror” focuses on Garufi’s photographic exploration of objects, figures and compositions in a manner that upends the traditional practices of photography. In a photographic practice that uses distortion, chance, unregulated light sources and constant repetition, Garufi strives to unearth and capture the essence of his subjects rather than their two dimensional image. Primordial
24 Sep - 30 Nov 2021 What does it mean to be primal? What is the primitive and our perception of it? Which thoughts, emotions, reactions and experiences speak to our basic primitive instincts, and what role do they have in civilisation?
These are the questions and challenges 11 artists confront in “Primordial”. Curation creates an immersive space where one feels removed and displaced from the throbbing mayhem of the external city. In that space viewers can connect with works of art that speak to our most base and primal instincts, emotions and perceptions. All this works together to create a space in which the audience can engage with the works of art on a plane that is akin to the exhibition prompt. Read more
