“Illuminations At Twilight Held Fast By Terror”: Auguste Garufi

10 December 2021 - 31 January 2022

Palo Gallery is pleased to announce Auguste Garufi: “Illuminations at Twilight Held Fast by Terror,” an exhibition focusing on Auguste Garufi’s unique photography ranging from the late 1990s to the 2010s, taking place at 57 Bond Street in NoHo, New York.

Garufi describes his work as a search for essence, ora and entry points into a deeper understanding of our universe. His search manifests itself in collage, sculpture, design, writing, print-making and photography. “Illuminations at Twilight Held Fast by Terror” focuses on Garufi’s photographic exploration of objects, figures and compositions in a manner that upends the traditional practices of photography.

In a photographic practice that uses distortion, chance, unregulated light sources and constant repetition, Garufi strives to unearth and capture the essence of his subjects rather than their two dimensional image.

Two decades of experimentation and distortion of imagery, without the use of editing software has led Garufi to understand the act of photography as painting on the negative rather than capturing a snapshot. In this exhibition, Palo Gallery is proud to present the evolution of Garufi’s photographic practice and the unique sensibility that he has developed through it.

To compliment the central photography series the artist has also installed a series of his sculptures developed throughout the same period and frequently used as subjects of his own photography.
